If you’re looking for some winter family fun, we invite you to Lake Placid, New York to experience all of our downhill winter excitement! And, no, we’re not just talking about skiing at Whiteface Mountain.

Toboggan Chute

A solid ice hill that sends you speeding across a frozen lake – awesome right!? Our truly unique Lake Placid Toboggan Chute is a must do for family fun adventure when you book your stay at Grand Adirondack Hotel. Within walking distance from the hotel, this newly renovated chute has been a fun winter activity for families since 1960. Grab a sled (provided) to speed down this ice-covered chute onto frozen Mirror Lake. Depending on weather conditions toboggans can glide over for a thousand feet after reaching the surface of the frozen lake.  Since the outrun of the slide is the frozen lake surface, the official opening day for operation varies from year to year. There has to be a layer of 10-12 inches of solid ice to ensure the safety of  guests. Admission prices include unlimited runs during the scheduled times and sled rentals, each toboggan can hold 2 to 4 people. Lines get long during holidays and weekends; you may have to wait 15 to 20 minutes between rides. Because this is an outdoor activity in our cool Lake Placid, New York we recommend that sledders dress warmly.

SNOW TUBING

Located in Saranac Lake, Mount Pisgah is a small ski hill that also offers a super-fun snow tubing hill with a rope tow that takes you back up to the top!  Just 20 minutes from Lake Placid, this classic “small town” skiing, snowshoeing and tubing spot is perfect for the whole family. In addition to winter fun, Mount Pisgah offers amazing views of the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness and Saranac River. Need to warm up? Slip into the lodge to enjoy hot chocolate and snacks in front of the native stone fireplace. The broad windows from the lodge let you watch the skiers and tubers across the whole slope.   Added bonus: Mount Pisgah has lights! Enjoy night skiing Monday through Friday.

SLEDDING

There’s no shortage of great sledding hills in Lake Placid, but one of our favorites is at the Lake Placid Club Golf Courses. This location offers great scenery and hills that vary from gentle to hold-onto-your-sled!  This is a BYOS (bring-your-own-sled) location that does not offer rentals or grooming.  Looking for sleds?  High Peaks Cyclery on Main Street is typically stocked with a great array of sled options throughout the winter season.

Lake Placid offers much larger hills than you’re likely to find in your backyard, so book your stay at Grand Adirondack Hotel and experience some serious winter fun!
